Wolfson offers a broad portfolio of audio product solutions for portable navigation systems. These products have a range of features suitable for everything from entry level navigation systems requiring voice driven direction commands to top of the range navigation devices which incorporate functions such as Bluetooth communications, multimedia playback, mobile television, and FM radio modes.

As system complexity increases compared to entry level systems, features such as voice activated commands, MP3 playback functionality and FM radio become popular in mid tier navigation systems. The audio requirements of the system demand analogue inputs and amplifiers and analogue to digital conversion to handle the voice streams and headphone amplifiers outputs. All of this functionality can be implemented using a multimedia codec. Integrated microphone amplifiers with large input gain are used to amplify voice commands captured by ECM and digital microphones. The voice signal is then converted to the digital domain using an ADC. WM8903 multimedia codec features support for both analogue and digital microphones and features 2 high quality 24 bit ADCs for exactly this purpose. WM8903 also features Stereo DACs, used to convert digital audio data into the analogue domain, for output to the speaker amplifier or FM transmitter via integrated line output drivers, or to the headphones via an integrated low power, ground referenced capacitor less headphone amplifier.
