Auto Gain Control
Overview
As the cost of hard disk drives and flash memory falls, consumers are increasingly storing all their music on their PCs and “side-loading” or synchronising content onto their MP3 player or mobile phone. Most media players are free to download and make it very easy for users to create their own playlists to listen to on the move.
All too frequently this leads to frustration for the listener when they realise that their compilation has been mastered at different volume levels, requiring them to constantly adjust the playback volume to suit their listening preferences. This is particularly an issue for classical music recordings, where quiet passages can disappear from the playback completely.
The SoundStage AGC removes this problem by constantly monitoring the audio signal and boosting it to fill the available dynamic range without clipping or distorting. Should the volume of the original signal increase, the gain of the SoundStage AGC is ramped down correspondingly to avoid clipping. What the consumer enjoys is their choice of music at their preferred listening level, all the time.

Implementation Data
Sonaptic SoundStage uses a modular architecture developed specifically for mobile handsets, where our highly efficient software makes maximum use of the limited processing power and available memory. Over 40 million handsets worldwide make use of Sonaptic’s audio enhancement technology to vastly improve the consumer experience of multimedia content and 3D games.
Our expertise in low MIPs and memory footprint implementations enables manufacturers to configure SoundStage solutions for a huge variety of devices, delivering great sound whatever the memory and processing budget. A typical AGC installation requires around 1.0 MIPs and 750 bytes of memory per channel at 48 kHz. Other implementations may vary from this. Supported sample rates are 22050, 32000, 44100 and 48000 Hz.
