HD Bass
Overview
One of the greatest challenges facing mobile device designers is delivering great audio from devices that consumers expect to be ever smaller and more portable. All too frequently the drive to miniaturisation leads to the audio playback being compromised, particularly the lower bass frequencies that consumers associate with audio quality. Quite simply, for most consumers a good bass performance equates to better overall perceived performance.

Sonaptic developed SoundStage HD Bass™ to address the challenge of bass improvement on small devices. HD Bass uses a variety of audio processing techniques, including psychoacoustics, to significantly enhance the listeners’ perception of bass performance from small speakers such as those used on mobile phones.

HD Bass works by removing low frequencies that smaller speakers cannot reproduce, generates odd and even harmonics, and applies selective dynamic range compression so that devices with small speakers are perceived to deliver hugely impressive bass performance, with deeper and more powerful lows, significantly improving the overall perception of audio quality.
Implementation Data
Sonaptic SoundStage uses a modular architecture developed specifically for mobile handsets, where our highly efficient software makes maximum use of the limited processing power and available memory. Over 40 million handsets worldwide make use of Sonaptic’s audio enhancement technology to vastly improve the consumer experience of multimedia content and 3D games.

Our expertise in low MIPs and memory footprint implementations enables manufacturers to configure SoundStage solutions for a huge variety of devices, delivering great sound whatever the memory and processing budget.

A typical HD Bass implementation for a mobile phone requires less than 6 MIPs at a sample rate of 48 kHz, operating on a 16 bit stream. Other sample rates are supported, and HD Bass can support up to 8 channels of PCM audio.

HD Bass is particularly effective when implemented alongside SoundStage ReTune and Virtual Surround System modules.
