Re Tune
Overview
Speaker selection in mobile phones and other consumer electronic devices is frequently made for reasons other than their playback capability – size, cost and familiarity are often more valued criteria. Whilst this offers manufacturers benefits in terms of product cost or ease of manufacturing, the speakers are rarely optimised for audio playback, so their performance can be compromised by unwanted peaks and troughs in their frequency response curve.

Sonaptic have developed ReTune™ to address this challenge and improve audio playback significantly. By inputting the speaker response parameters into the algorithm, ReTune selectively boosts and attenuates the audio signal according to the speaker response, resulting in clear, clean and uncoloured audio.

For consumers, the result is crisp, clear and great sounding audio. For manufacturers, more cost effective speakers, or smaller speakers that complement the industrial design, no longer need to sound anything other than crisp, clear and full. And as ReTune can also be applied to low-cost headphones found in-box with many phones and music-players, manufacturers can significantly improve audio performance without increasing the hardware BOM cost.
Implementation Data
Sonaptic SoundStage uses a modular architecture developed specifically for mobile handsets, where our highly efficient software makes maximum use of the limited processing power and available memory. Over 40 million handsets worldwide make use of Sonaptic’s audio enhancement technology to vastly improve the consumer experience of multimedia content and 3D games.

Our expertise in low MIPs and memory footprint implementations enables manufacturers to configure SoundStage solutions for a huge variety of devices, delivering great sound whatever the memory and processing budget. SoundStage ReTune can be implemented as a stand-alone module, or as one of the components of the SoundStage audio enhancement portfolio of products. Where implementations are memory constrained, ReTune can produce significant speaker performance improvements using just 1.5 MIPs per channel at 44 kHz, with a 32 short FIR of memory.

A frequency response curve for the speaker is required to calibrate the module. If it is not feasible to calibrate individual speakers on a production line, then a generic speaker family frequency response curve can be used.
