Engineering club from local primary school a winner at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry’s 2008 Celebration of Engineering Edinburgh, UK, 26 June 2008 - Scott McNeill, an applications engineer from Wolfson Microelectronics Plc, has led a team of 10 children from Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School in Tranent, East Lothian to first prize at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry’s (SCDI) 2008 Celebration of Engineering event. Scott’s club scooped the Primary Showcase Trophy with a clever electronic musical toy design targeted at children with special needs. The design beat off competition from over 50 other engineering clubs from across Scotland.
As a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (STEMNET) Science and Engineering Ambassador Scott offers his time, enthusiasm and expertise to help local schools inspire young people to take an interest in science and engineering. With Wolfson’s essential support, Scott has been able to run weekly sessions at the school where he sets challenging tasks and teaches the children about electronics design and circuitry.
Scott McNeill commented: “I’m incredibly proud of what the group achieved. They were up against tough competition from older kids in well established clubs. This is a massive achievement for the children who only started ‘engineering’ a couple of months ago. The calibre of the ideas and talent on show was remarkable.”
He continues: “Wolfson has been a great support, giving me the time off and impetus to run the club and fulfil my role as a science & engineering ambassador. This is something I feel very passionately about and it is motivating to know that I have the company’s full backing.”
