Wolfson Microelectronics Expands Family of Portable Audio Devices
Monday, July 9, 2001
Wolfson Microelectronics plc, the technical leader in developing audio ICs for multimedia and communications applications, expanded its family of devices for internet appliances today with the introduction of two new parts. The two new devices, the WM8734, a CODEC, and the WM8739 an ADC, meet the performance needs for consumer recording applications, while the low-power consumption make these new devices ideally suited for portable appliances.

’Wolfson has proven expertise for combining cutting edge audio performance with ultra-low power design techniques,’ said David Milne, CEO and managing director of Wolfson Microelectronics. ’We are developing this technology to create an unparalleled family of low power, audio products for applications such as DVD recorder, CD-RW players, internet audio, PDA, digital still cameras, camcorder and musical instruments.’

Wolfson Audio Devices Offer Designers More Choices
The WM8734 and the WM8739 extend Wolfson’s range of audio products and allow designers to go to a single source for all their high performance digital audio applications. The Company’s audio converter technology uses a proprietary low-order, multi-bit, sigma-delta architecture. As a result, the WM8734 and the WM8739 are not affected by jitter, offer class leading linearity and better sound quality.

The WM8734 is a codec that integrates programmable gain amp (PGA), ADC and a DAC. The WM8739 is an ADC with integrated input PGA. Including the PGA allows users the full dynamic range of the ADC, thus maximizing performance. Both chips support 24-bit resolution, up to 32-bit I/O and sampling rates up to 96kHz. The ADC in the WM8734, offers a signal-to-noise ration (SNR) of 90dB, while the integrated DAC provides a 100dB SNR. Both chips provide two options for control: a three-wire or two-wire MPU serial control interface. The new devices operate on a power supply range from 2.7V to 3.6V. Both products are available now in a 20-pin SSOP package.
