WOLFSON MICROELECTRONICS INTRODUCES FAMILY OF SINGLE-CHIP AFES FOR HIGH-SPEED, HIGH-QUALITY IMAGING APPLICATIONS
Monday, May 21, 2001

Single-Chip Solution Integrates Analog Pre-Processing and Digital Conversion Pin-compatible for Ease of Integration

Wolfson Microelectronics plc, the technical leader in developing ICs for multimedia and imaging applications, today introduced a family of high-level integrated analog front ends (AFE). Dubbed the WM819x family, this set of devices features high-speed, high-quality imaging performance. At the same time, the WM819x family is highly integrated, combining both analog pre-processing and analog-to-digital conversion in a single chip package. Additionally, the WM819x family maintains pin compatibility with previous generation products, providing a low-cost and easy migration to this next generation set of devices.

“The explosive growth of the Internet drives growth in the digital imaging market and is generating demand for better, easier to use devices,” said David Milne, president and managing director of Wolfson Microelectronics. “At Wolfson, we are focused on supplying a full range of products which meet the needs of both the consumer and professional market segments.”

True 16-bit Performance
The WM819x family operates at resolutions of 14- or 16-bits and speeds of 6 or 12MSPS. All WM819x parts have three analog inputs with individual analog pre-processing sections for color depths of up to 48 bits-per-pixel. Alternatively, a single analog channel can operate at higher speed to take full advantage of the ADC conversion speed in monochrome mode. Additionally, these devices allow users to take advantage of the higher throughput rates of new interface standards such as USB2 and IEEE 1394. System upgrades and design re-use become straightforward with the WM819x and is pin and package compatible with existing products requiring only minimal software changes.

The Wolfson WM819x family provides a complete solution for interfacing to CCD sensors in a wide range of high-performance imaging applications including X-Ray scanners and office multi-functionals.

Availability
There are currently six parts available in this product family. Even numbered parts are available in a 28-pin SOIC, odd numbered parts are available in a 48-pin TQFP.
